Tour of the Somme Battlefields CANCELLED

A rally which will encompass a tour of the Somme Battlefields is currently being planned. It is intended that the rally will be based at Camping Le Velodrome, Albert. This is a municipal two star site based on the edge of Albert. The sites receives generally good reviews. At the time the rally is planned to take place ACSI rates will apply (2020 price €16 Euros)

It is intended that there will be four days allocated to walking the battlefields (two short walks per day) and one day will be given over to a coach tour of the area. The group will be picked up and dropped off each day by coach at the camp site.

Sites to be visited will include Thiepval, the Ulster Tower Memorial; Newfoundland Memorial; a walk to Serre via the Hawthorn Ridge mine to look at the many Pals’ battalions that served in the area; a walk focusing on some of the WW1 poets, starting near Mametz and finishing at the Devonshire Trench cemetery; a coach tour that will include visiting the Arras area, the Vimy Ridge Memorial and its preserved tunnels and trenches, Notre Dame de Lorette Memorial ; a walk from Becourt Becordel to the Lochnagar mine crater; a walk around Pozieres and Courcelette where the first tank battle in world history took place; a walk from the Welsh Dragon memorial to High Wood; and a walk around the New Zealand Memorial, Longueval and Delville Wood.

The walks will be led by Vic Piuk (Englishman) who is an acknowledged expert on the Somme Battlefields and WW1 in general. He has written articles about the war for various publications and has contributed to a number of TV documentaries. He has been leading battlefield tours for many years and loves sharing the tales of veterans he knew and with whom he visited the battlefields. He believes this gives him a unique insight into the conflict.

The walking is easy and not overlong (3 to 4 km) and it is planned that on the walking days the group will stop at a suitable hostelry where you can purchase food & drink or bring your own if you prefer.

The rally will be limited to 15 units and the approximate cost, including the battlefield tours, Welcome & Farewell meals and Happy Hours, but excluding site fees,  is estimated to be €475 Euros per unit. If you wish to express an interest in this rally please apply on line using the button below.
