2020 NZ South Island Casual Catch UP
Sunday 8th March - Monday 8th June 2020
2020 ICA NZ SOUTH ISLAND CASUAL CATCH UP
THIS IS NOT A RALLY
NO MONEY IS REQUIRED. IT IS PAY AS YOU GO.
START DATE 8th March 2020 at WHATAMANGO BAY (PICTON)
Organisers Cathy and Martin Hart, Reg and Leonie Derrick and Jeanette and Buddy Craig.'
This date will suit members continuing on from Bill and Val’s rally time to cross over to the South Island, especially if the weather is a little rough for the ferries.
The rational behind this trip is to carry on from Bill and Val Solomon’s rally after it finishes in the North Island (near Wellington) on the 6th March 2020.
The proposal is that those members interested can either join or leave as they wish as this will allow them to visit areas of particular interest to them. It is envisaged that each time we collectively meet, decisions would be made to suit when and where we would next meet together. It is preferable to meet together during the week as this allows a greater choice of meal venues at which we can stay, as most clubs, RSA’s, etc are busy with their own members during the weekends and prefer us mid week.
The initial get together is anticipated to be at the DOC Camp at WHATAMANGO BAY which is approximately 13km north of PICTON. This is a lovely, isolated camp where we intend to spend several days or more relaxing, gathering cockles when the tide is out. Cockle fritters are great and it is a lot of fun having a “free feed”. This is an ideal base for those who wish to explore around the coast for day trips or longer so no one will be bored. It is also a place for those who wish to leave and go to the NELSON/ GOLDEN BAY areas for a week.
Next meeting destination will possibly be BLENHEIM race course for a few days to do washing ,etc and to visit the OMAKA WW1 and WW2 AEROPLANE MUSEUMS (and cars). This has a lot of Peter Jacksons aircraft on display. This can take more than a day as there is a lot to see.
MARFELLS BEACH DOC CAMP. This is another favorite beach for us to stay at and for those keen enough there is a great walk around the bottom of the cliff face to CAPE CAMPBELL Lighthouse. About 7km each way.
Next meet together may be DONEGAL HOUSE about 4 km north of KAIKOURA. Brilliant Irish Pub theme, great food and drink and great overnight parking, plus only a 4km to KAIKOURA to see the rebuildiing of the roads and township following the recent earthquake, with large areas of the seabed now exposed.
HANMER SPRINGS For those that wish to take an inland route , this is a nice alternative State Highway 1. You may consider travelling over the LEWIS PASS to GREYMOUTH and back over ARTHUR’S PASS to CHRISTCHURCH
By now, the group should have a feel of what we each enjoy and can mutually make decisions of where to next.
As organisers, Reg and Leonie, Jeanette and myself (Buddy) intend to head toward CHRISTCHURCH , from where we can explore the LYTTLTON area on the east coast,as well as the CHRISTCHURCH rebuild. Plus, the TRANS ALPINE EXPRESS train from CHRISTCHURCH to GREYMOUTH and back is a must for those that haven’t done it.
COASTAL PACIFIC SCENIC RAILWAY TRIP CHRISTCHURCH TO PICTON (and return) . This trip most follows the coast with magnificient sea views. This trip takes approximately 6 hours 15 minutes each way, with a 1 hour stop in PICTON. Fares vary from about $79 to $200+ depending how far in advance you book and for what day.
We have been offered the chance to stay on a farm at METHVEN which will enable members the chance to visit MT HUTT. A few years ago there was a glacier to walk to as well as avalanches every half hour or so, all very spectacular.
FISHING (this what it’s all about for those who love fresh water fishing). The rivers, canals and lakes provide some of the greatest fresh water fishing in NZ. TWIZEL is an excellent area to use as a base with plenty of excellent facilities.Reg and Buddy (and wives who have the privilege of cooking the fish)have made regular holy pilgrimages to fish these waterways very successfully over the past 20 years. We hope this trip will once again, meet our expectations, and would be only to pleased to show/help any other would be fishermen. (You do require a South Island fishing licence). We will very lkely spend several weeks or more in these locations. This will also give members more oportunities to explore destinations of their choice.
WANAKA WARBIRDS OVER WANAKA Friday 10th April to Sunday 12th April. This is a must see for those that haven’t been before and those that want to go again. You can stay at the venue in your van for the 3 days (Just under $400/ couple, and well worth it) or we have the oportunity to stay on a farm about 10 km away and just go for one of the days at approximately $90/person.
This farm (belongs to one of Reg and Leonie’s sons is a handy (and FREE) place to stay (possibly for several days prior and after the airshow) to explore WANAKA area.
After WANAKA, we anticipate that members will have sorted themselves into like minded groups and explore further south at their own leisure. Reg and Buddy (and wives) don’t intend, at this point in time, heading any further south from here, instead heading for more fishing. Those interested are welcome to come. We would head back to North Island late May or June.
QUEENSTOWN Very commercialised with virtually no cheap areas to stay but a must visit area. SS EARNSLAW day trip to Walter Peak Station on Lake WAKATIPU is a must for those who haven’t done this excursion.
Beautiful drive around Lake Wakatipu to GLENORCHY and KINLOCH is a must and good areas to stay at.
At this point members need to decide which direction they wish to go.
Choices are TE ANAU and through to MILFORD SOUND
CROMWELL visit the new car racing facilities
DUNEDIN explore OTAGO PENINSULA
INVERCARGIL visit RICHARDSON TRUCK MUSEUM
BLUFF for a feed of oysters
STEWART ISLAND (by boat or air, and it may be worth staying for a
day or two)
OR (for Reg and Buddy), back to the canals/lakes for more fishing.
IMPORTANT DATES Start 7th March (plus afew days) at WHATAMANGO
WARBIRDS OVER WANAKA 10th April
Other dates to be advised nearer time or during rally.
RETURN TRIP We anticipate going back to PICTON by travelling via the West Coast.
As we believe it will take at least three months to do justice to this trip, we will not be travelling quickly, or every day, as this is going to be a “holiday” as well as an enjoyable event. We won’t all be together all of the time as we all have different agendas (and time available) but we will have fun and great memories for many years to come.
NOTES For those overseas members who may wish to come, consider flying direct to/from , and hiring a van from CHRISTCHURCH. Saves cost of COOK STRAIT CROSSING..
